A Festival of the Humanities
We are delighted to have received funding from the AHRC/British Academy to host two events as part of the national Being Human Festival 2022.
On Friday 11th November 2022 we will screen our project film All That is Buried at the Digital Performance Lab at MediaCity UK. On Saturday 12th November 2022 we will host public Art and Writing Workshops inspired by South African modernism at the Old Fire Station on Salford Crescent.
'Each November, the Being Human Festival presents hundreds of free events across the UK and beyond. Festival events aim to celebrate and demonstrate the ways in which the humanities inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world. Each year the festival invites researchers at universities and other research organisations to collaborate with local community and cultural partners to create exciting and engaging events and projects for all to enjoy. Being Human is a national festival by virtue of being local, with events taking place everywhere from Dundee to Devon'. - Being Human Festival.

Film Screening of All That Is Buried and Q&A with Filmmakers

Join us for the premiere of All That Is Buried. Shot in Cape Town, South Africa, this short film showcases the talents of poet Zizipho Bam, writer Sindiswa Busuku, artist/activist Haroon Gunn-Salie and musician Dizu Plaatjies as they move between their homes, work and sites of inspiration in and around the city. The film explores the lasting impacts of colonialism and apartheid in and on South African art forms, as the four creatives explain the role of art, music and writing in responding to ongoing racial and gender inequalities in South Africa today.
The event includes a welcome drink, and following the screening, filmmakers Maire Tracey and Simon Stanton-Sharma, and researchers Dr Jade Munslow Ong and Dr Sanja Nivesjö, will answer questions from the audience.

Art and Writing Workshops Inspired by
South African Modernism

**THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED**
Our fun, free and creative Art and Writing workshops are inspired by the work of South African modernist artist, Albert Adams. The workshops will include a brief introduction to South African art and literature by researchers Dr Alice Correia and Dr Jade Munslow Ong. Then professional artist Natalie Ilsley of NatalieEmmaDesigns, and award-winning poet and academic Dr Judy Kendall will lead guests in creating their own watercolour paintings and poetic writing - so no experience needed! After the workshops, participants will be invited to spend time in the Albert Adams exhibitions at the Old Fire Station and Clifford Whitworth Library (light buffet lunch provided). Participants will be given the option of having their work featured in an online gallery as part of the research project South African Modernism 1880-2020.
Materials and refreshments will be provided. Recommended for age 12 and above.
