A Festival of the Humanities

We are delighted to have received funding from the AHRC/British Academy to host an event as part of the national Being Human Festival 2023.

On Saturday 11th November 2023 we will host a public Zine-making workshop inspired by South Africa's DRUM magazine (1950s-1960s) in the Zine Maker Space of the Clifford Whitworth Library at the University of Salford.

'Being Human offers the public an opportunity to discover, enjoy and learn more about the research happening in our local universities and research organisations, with events being taken off campus and brought to life in our parks and gardens, high streets and shopping centres, pubs and cafes, museums and galleries, libraries and community centres, theatres and cinemas and more! This year 64 universities and research organisations are participating in our national celebration of humanities research, in collaboration with hundreds of community and cultural partner organisations.'. - Being Human Festival

All welcome to join us in the Salford Zine Maker Space to create your own zines inspired by the South African DRUM magazine!

In this fun, free and creative three-hour workshop, AHRC/BBC New Generation Thinker Dr Jade Munslow Ong will introduce the pioneering anti-apartheid writing, photography and politics of the South African DRUM magazine of the 1950s/60s. You will then be invited to make your own DRUM-inspired zines, with the help of expert Zinesters and librarians at the Salford Zine Library – no experience needed!

After the workshops, participants will be invited to spend time browsing the collection of zines held at the Clifford Whitworth Library. Participants will be given the option of having their work featured in an online gallery as part of the research project South African Modernism 1880-2020.

Materials and light refreshments will be provided. Recommended for age 12 and above.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 9–18 November 2023. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
